Calabria Ora
From Amantea to Maratea in the name of ‘Gaia’
Cosenza – The engine has started for the organizing machine of the Gaia International Festival. The event, running from the 19th to the 27th of June 2010, will unify symbolically, in the name of the environment, many towns between Amantea, in Calabria, and Maratea, in Basilicata. The organizers maintain that the event will host delegations from all the nations that border the Mediterranean Sea, and from all over the world as well. For now the first community of the Tirreno Cosentino that has signed on is San Lucido.
The Gaia coordinating committee is comprised of citizens, mostly residents of the Alto Tirreno Cosentino, ecologists and environmentalists, driven into action by the discovery of the “Ships of Poison”. They intend to demonstrate how Calabria and the South in general can experience a rebirth thanks to the activism of its citizens, unearthing channels of commonality in social life that until now have not been explored. This, in turn, indicates the potential for a society that develops sustainably and is people-friendly.
Today is the first meeting of the coordinating committee. The festival proposes to elevate, by way of the arts, the fortunes and the reputation of the South through a rich tapestry of art exhibits, video installations, debates on socio-economic and ecological topics, theatrical shows, cinematic forums, live music, recreational activities, and film/video competitions.
